At approximately 1310 hours, 26 August 1953, lst Lt Norman Re Lucia, 53d Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron, Medium, Weather, Bermuda was driving on base in a southerly direction. Off to his right over the field at an altitude of about 8=10,000 feet he noticed the sun reflecting from a silvery object, cylin- drical in shape, something like a plate about 18 inches in diameter, which seemed to be hoveringe He could see the edge and part of the underside of it. As he continued to watch it (driving very slowly) it began to move in a lateral line, at right angleg to him. As it did so its shape seemed to change to spherical becoming elongated. It had no Wings, tail, nor windows and no exhauste He kept it in view from three (3) to five (5) seconds and it suddenly disappeared, not gradually as an airplane does but suddenly and completely in a sort of "fantastic" mannere He stopped his car and looked around but it had completely disappeared from view. The total sighting was five (5) to seven (7) seconds. The day was clear with just a few puffs of cloud in the vicinity. A light wind was blowing. Lieutenant Lucia immediately came to my office, and told me what had happened saying he had seen a flying saucer. He was excited about it in a contained sort of waye Together we scanned the sky to no avail, it being about five (5) minutes Since his sightinge Queried about preconceived opinions as to flys ing saucers be said he had read all about the reports in the states and their act Lon and — although he felt their was some credence to it all because of 2 me of reports he would remain skeptical wmtil he actually saw one aims now he has seen one. Muay Not a science-fiction fan and not one to jump to conclusio ns Tiewt Lucia is instead a realist, of moderate speech and manners. He is res (28) years of age and, with the aid of glasses which he wears always, seems to have excellent visione He is a non-rated officer. However, it is my opinion that because of his quick conclusion as to what he had seen and his general reaction to his sighting that, in effect, he was so predisposed about the topic emt when he saw this "object" it struck an immediate responsive chorde There had been no weather balloon releases within two (2) hours prior to the Sighting.
