On 8 March 1953 unidentified objects were sighted on GCA radar scopes of the 1955-1 Detachment AACS, Ashiye Air Base (133° 54' N - 130° 398' B) from 2137 I until 2212 I. The first object was observed visually and by radar by GCA operators and visually by control tower operators who were called. It appeared as a definite "blip" on the GCA seope, the same size as a aircraft. It appeared for a period of between eight ($) to ten (10) mimtes at an altitude of 1,000 fect. It gave the appearance of a white unfooused light. For quite some time it appeared motion- less and then decended to an altitude of 500 feet, changing to a yellow color. After decending to 500 feet it climbet to its original altitude and disappeared at 2145 I. Ite estimated distance was six (6) miles away going from an east to a northwest direction. No umiaual sounds were heari. 2. The control tower ealled Itasuke APB, a JADF base, which dispatched an F-94 to the area. The aircraft arrived in the area around 2150 I and made between gix (6) and eight (8) runs from the north end of the runway to eight (8) miles out at sea, The plane stayed in the area for twenty (20) minutes and reported negative on both visual and radar sightings of flying objects, 3. The GOA hed similar sightings on their scopes from 2205 I until 2212 I. These "blips" appeared similar to the first except they appeared sometimes in pairs end closer in, (from 1/4 to 3/4 of a mile). None of these latter "blips" were sighted visually by either the GCA unit or the control tower, At no time were these “blips” end the F94 observed at the same tima. They moved across the seope from 240 to 300 mph from altitudes of 200 to 1,000 feat, direction from northvest to southwest and from east te northwest. No unusual sounds were audible. 4 The crash boat at Ashiya was alerted ani searched the area from } of a mile off shore to 2) miles from 2200 I until 2230 I. They made no sightings of flying objects except the search plane that was in the area. There were two (2) sardine boats moving in an easterniy direction towards Ashiya where they are currently stationed. They have white Carbite ruming lights, at no time did they appear yellow, They were from } to 2} miles off shore. 5. Weather at the time of the observation: Sky clear, visibility ten (10) miles, winds west ten (10) kmots, altimeter reading 30.17. 6. There wore eight (8) men making these spy ranging in experience fron ¢ to 4} years and ranging in rank from 4/36 to M/Sgt. COMMENTS of the Preparing Officer: 1. The chance of a reflection from a light on a fishing boat is one possibility, but the fact that there were no clouis and clear vis- ibility precludes that podsibility. For the other objects; they were closer in, they were not sigh by either the crew of the crash boat or the F~94's airborne radar. If they were the size of an airplane as they appeared on the scope end ag near as they were with a clear night they would heve been geen with or without a light.
