OF os PAGES le At 15034%, AIRMAN SECOND CLASS CLYDE VIERRA and AIRMAN SECOND CLASS FRANKLIN D. STEINBERG were standing at the east side of Selfridge Air Force Base, near Lake St. Clair, when they observed a lavender colored light, approximately the size of the North Star, appear west of their position approx- imately twenty (20) degrees above the horizon and travel in a northeasterly direction. The light seemed to ascend as it travelled this course and zig-zag from left to right. Both airmen agreed that the light was approximately two (2) miles distant from their position but since it appeared to be at a great altitude, an accurate estimate of the distance was impossible. 2. AIRMEN STEINBERG and VIERRA said that the light travelled to a position which appeared to be over the "JET BAR" located on Highway M-29, at the north- eastern end of SELFRIDGE AIR FORCE BASE, in less than two (2) minutes and hung motionless in the sky for a few seconds. The light then headed east and dis- appeared beyond the horizon. There was no trail or sound and since the object appeared to be at such a high altitude, neither observer could estimate the speed. The light was observed for two (2) minutes. 3. Both observers continued to watch the sky and at 150394, another light of lavender color, approximately the size of the North Star, having no trail or sound, appeared from the west, approximately twenty (20) degrees above the horizon, also travelling in a northeasterly direction. The light ascended while zig-zagging at a tremendous speed until it seemed to be at the altitude of the stars and then stopped in the vicinity of the "JET BAR" for approximately one (1) minute. The very brilliant, lavender color of the light was in direct contrast with the stars. It then continued to move eastward in a horizontal path until it reached a position ninty (90) degrees above the horizon where it stopped again. he At 1503556, AIRMEN VIERRA and STEINBERG notified AIRMAN FIRST CLASS ALFES G. SMITH and two (2) other airmen. They watched the motionless light for about one (1) minute. 5. AIRMEN VIERRA and STEINBERG then reported their observations to the TENTH AIR FORCE STAFF DUTY OFFICER, CAPTAIN V. H. BUSWELL, who returned with them to watch the light which, however, was no longer visible. According to AIRMAN SMITH, the light moved to a position of approximately 30 degrees above the horizon in a period of five (5) or six (6) minutes and grew dimmer as it disappeared from sight at 150008. This light was observed for ten (10) minutes.
