At EATON RAPIDS, MICHIGAN on 20 duly 1952 at 06308 while standing on his front lawn looking east, MR. ALLAN H. MILLER and his WIFE visually ebserved one (1) object of light bluish radiance with five (5) pointed prongs which- appeared to be about fifty (50) miles distant, although he reasoned that it must have been in outer space. @e At first appearance the object observed was stationary at approxi- mately two (2) thousand feet altitude. Its first maneuver was to glow brighter and move in a circular motion as if spinning, then travel northward approximately two (2) or three (3) thousand feet in horizontal flight. ‘The number of times this maneuver was executed is not known by the observer but he states that some- time during these maneuvers the object would suddenly ascend to an estimated forty (40) thousand feet in vertical flight, then return to its original position at two (2) thousand feet. The rate of speed attaindd by the object in vertical flight appeared to be at the speed of light since this change in altitude was accomplished instantly. At times the object would move directly away from the observer toward the east diminishing in brilliance as it did so, changing from a bluish glow of light to a gOlden color. Following this maneuver the object would fade completely for approximately thirty (30) seconds and then reappear in its full brilliance. 3+ MR. MILLER states that after he and his WIFE had observed the eb ject for approximately thirty (30) minutes he telephoned the CIVIL AERONAUTICS ADMINISTRATION office in LANSING, MICHIGAN, reporting what he had seen and asked the observers at the airport to watch the sky to the east for this object. After his telephone call was completed MR. MILLER returned to his lawn and observed the object for another thirty (30) minutes. During the remainder of his observations MR. MILLER states that the object followed the same pattern of movements as already described. . MR. MILLER states that he could hear no sound nor could he distinguish any trail or exhaust from the object. He further states that he observed no aircraft in the vicinity at any time during the sighting. TENTH AIR FORCE DIRECTOR OF INTELLIGENCE COMMENT: 1. The investigating officer, CAPTAIN DAVIS, states that MR. MILLER is a non-alcoholic and appeared to be conscientious and reliable. 2. The investigating officer further stated that he queried the CIVIL AERONAUTICS ADMINISTRATION at LANSING, MICHIGAN in reference to MR. MILLER'S telephone call’ to that organization. The person on duty at the time of the reported sighting made no report of the telephone call. 3» The 66lst AC&W Squadron at SELFRIDGE AFB, MICHIGAN identified two (2) friendly aircraft in the vicinity during the time of the sighting. i. NOTAMS indicated that the UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA at MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA was scheduled to release a cosmic ray balloon on 19 duly 1952. Veloc- ities and the prevailing winds could possibly have placed the balloon in the general vicinity during the time of the sighting, however, the mere presence of the balloon would not account for the sudden changes in altitude at such tremendous speeds as reported.
