At approximately 19:34, MST, 27 January 1953, S/Set John E Helmer, AF 1628 64.56, of the 63rd Bomb Squadron, 43rd Bomb Wing, Medium, Davis—Monthan Air Force Base and his wife Mrs Dorothy Helmer, of 4351 Eastland Street, Tucson, Arizona, observed an unidentified flying object traveling in a general Southwest direction. The object was traveling at a high rate of speed and appeared to trail a rocket-type exhaust. (See diagram). The object appeared round, brilliant white in color and larger than the largest star in the sky. There was no discernible propulsion noise. S/Sgt Helmer states the object disappeared in about one minute after traveling through about 30 degrees of arc. It faded from view as if due to great distance. 2. Significance — Unknown. The object observed by S/Sgt Helmer and his wife was round, brilliant white in color and trailed a what seemed to be Luminous rocket-type exhaust gases. The object was traveling at one altitude (unestimated by the observer) and appeared to be traveling four to five times faster than a modern jet fighter aircrait. There were no propulsion or exhaust noises and the object seemed to disappear due to distance after about one minute of observation. The luminous trail of the object appeared to vary in length. The color of the exhaust from the object to about three times the length of the object in trail, appeared reddish white and solid. (See diagram). From point #1 (in disoram) to point #2, the exhaust appeared to thin out assume a flame colored hue and was spaced at short intervals much like rocket exhaust. (See diagram). There were no apparent flight control surfaces or silhouette and the object accomplished no maneuvers other than straight line travel from Northwest to Southeast. 2. Time sighted: 19:3) MST 27 January 1953 Length of sighting: Approximately one (1) minute 3. Manner of observation: Visual only 4. Location of observer: 4351 Eastland Street, Tucson, Arizona 32°12'N/110°56''W 5. Identifying information on observer: 3/3 sgt Helmer has had )} years and 8 months of Military Service with 2 years and 6 months on flying status. He is a high school graduate with some college credits, seems to be of average intelligence. Although, Sergeant Helmer wears glasses for reading, his eyes checked 20/20 on his last physical examination. Sergeant Helmer is well thought of by his superiors and contemporaries and is of above average reliability. 6. Comments of Preparing Officer: $/Set Helmer appeared to be of excellent character and seemed sincere during the rendition of his report. He has never seen @ similar object and although he does not know what he saw, he is certain it was not a meteorological or astronomical phenomenon. $/Set Helmer's training as a gunner qualifies him as a competent observer.
