JAL 1025 (UFO) Director's Response _ . _ Reply to From Pubiic Affairs Officer Attn of rise To On March 12, 19307, 1:30 pm, I met at tne request of the Director and Deputy to discuss the conmunication probiems that existed between AAL-5 and AAL-500 (AAL- 300 was in attendance aiso), resulting from AAL-500's refusal to continue providing FUiA materlais on tne JAL 1626 UFO flignt, statements made py AAL-500 in tne Director's staff meeting re the "niarketing" of UFO material by AAL-5, and the subsequent workload placed upon AAL-500, and tne questioning or AAL-5 authority to request FOIA materials based on a news media verbal request (ii.Sayles). Result of tnis dialogue was tnat AAL=-5 would henceforth preface requests witn a Statement to determine the workload/response possibility of AAL-500 prior to making requests for AAL-500 services, ie FOIA. AAL-500 and AAL-5 agreed to cease nostiie dialogue. in a related but separate action, tne Director respondea to my memorandum of March 10, 1967, documenting tne pre-release of JAL 1628 investigation materiai by Wasnington D.C. FAA staff (via information provided py AAL-500), by stating that 1). tne release of the material Mlgnt nave taken to long, 2). you cannot xpect cne system in FAA to xeep material confidentia.:, and tnat 3). ne would take care of tnis in a personal manner the next time he visits the waSnington, J.C. office. I informed the Director/Deputy that considering their response and tne system's inability to protect FAA investigation material (wniie in progress) tnat in nindsignt I migne not in tne future respond to emergency information situations in the same manner.
