pe A costae THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 1987 / PAGE A3 $$$ — oOo : IN SDE Mt a R A i i “ 1p i [INSIDE THE BELTWAY, i it WAX SSS ’ a!" ~~ Alien invasion | There’ve been stories recent) about documents that walked away from the National Archies. This story, though, is about a @c- ument that may have been planted in the Archives. Sup- posedly, it’s a secret memo from ~ Robert Cutler, special assistant to’ President Eisenhower, to Gen. Na- than Twining, dated July 14, 1954. It’s about a briefing on ‘the recov- ery of a crashed flying saucer and four alien bodies near Ros- well, N.M., in July of 1947. Several prominent UFO re- searchers, including nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman, say the document was found in de- classified Archives files. They were challenged this week by the Committee for the Scientific In- vestigation of Claims of the Para- normal. That group labeled the document — and other related documents — “clumsy counter- feits” a “hoax” anda “forgery. William Moore, one of the UFO researchers, told us his group “never said the documents are au- thentic. We believe they are.” He denounced the committee that de- nounced him, saying they “have never taken a rational approach.” And he accused the primary accuser, Philip J. Klass, of being “a sloppy researcher who pirates other people’s work.” The National Archives staff studied the Cutler memo and found 10 indications that it was not a legitimate document. Mr. Moore has counterarguments to most of their findings. And he says he has more documents re- lated to the UFO crash that he will release soon. —
