The Messengers of God, successors to God's Children in other parts of the world, have a strongly sexual inclination, and claim that "we cannot exclude sex as a means of attracting souls and saving them for Jesus." In addition there are the Mormons, or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, evangelicals of all kinds who strongly supported the candidacy of current Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Pentecostals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Adventists, Seventh Day Adventists, Greek Orthodox, Christian Scientists, Islamic Beneficience, and dozens of other sects. Hinduism, the Rosicrucians, and the religions of Japanese origin also have their representatives. The Hare Krishnas shave their heads, wear saffron robes, and have founded branch organizations in several Peruvian cities. The religions of Japanese origin are the Sekai Kiusei Kyo; Sukiu Mahikari, to which former Peruvian soccer player Hugo Sotil, who also played for Barcelona of Spain, was affiliated; the Seicho No le; the Tenkirio Church, and the Messianic Church. In Peru there has been freedom of religion since 1915, when the article of the Constitution that granted privilege to the Catholic Church over any other was abolished. According to Bishop Luis Bambaren Gaztelumendi of Chimbote, the northern Peruvian port, some "sects politicize religion and take politics as something sacred." He seems to have been referring specifically to the Evangelicals, who helped Fujimori win the elections. The bishop said that sectarianism in Latin America is based on fundamentalism and on a literal interpretation of the Bible. "The sects have proliferated, and are continuously splitting over not interpreting the Bible correctly," the bishop said, adding that the development of these sects is due to a lack of priests, as the sectarians preach with no theological basis to many Catholics who are unable to defend their faith.
